Reality: McKinsey's 2025 AI usage survey found only 5–6% of roughly 2,000 companies had adopted AI in manufacturing, versus roughly 30% in functions like marketing and IT.

That gap isn't a failure of will or budget. Manufacturing data is simply more complex, higher-dimensional, and more interdependent than the data behind a marketing dashboard or an IT ticketing system — it spans ERP, MES, quality systems, machine telemetry, and the tacit knowledge sitting in your planners' heads, often none of it cleanly connected.

What this means for discrete manufacturers

Whether you're running automotive lines, industrial equipment, electronics, medical devices, or aerospace parts, the practical implication is the same: don't plan your roadmap around full autonomy showing up next quarter. Plan around the unglamorous work that actually closes the gap — getting your data connected, clean, and trustworthy — because that's the prerequisite every one of these adoption numbers is actually measuring.

This is also exactly why data diagnostics tends to matter more, earlier, than most AI shopping lists suggest.
